HPV stands for Human Papillomavirus. There are over 100 types of HPV viruses with some having different symptoms than others. HPV virus types 6, 11, 30, 40-45, 51, and 54 are known to cause warts on various parts of the body while HPV virus types 16, 18, 31 and 45 are known to cause cancers to develop around the genitals. These two categories of HPV types are split into “high risk” types, which are the cancers that grow near the genital area and the “low risk” types which form 90% of the warts that form around the genitals that rarely develop into cancer. More severe symptoms for women include vaginal discharge of pale, watery, pink, brown, bloody, or foul-smelling. HPV, if not vaccinated beforehand, can be very lethal as it develops into cancer, which has a high rate of leading to death.
As lethal and deadly as this virus may sound, there are ways of preventing it. For example, you could have protection while conducting any sexual activity or get a vaccination at a young age to prevent this all together. One more well-known vaccine called Gardasil 9, approved by the Food and Drug Administration, prevents HPV types 6, 11, 16, 18, 31, 33, 45, 52 and 58. This vaccine, however, is only available in the United States of America. There are two other HPV vaccines that are available world wide. First, Gardasil, which prevents HPV types 6, 11, 16, and 18 the ones that cause 90% of warts growing around the genital area and second, Cervarix, which prevents HPV types 16 and 18, which are responsible for 70% genital cancer. The ingredients for Gardasil 9 include little proteins disguised as the appearance of a Human Papillomavirus along with Aluminum, Sodium Chloride (Salt) and L-Histidine, one of the 23 protein-synthesizing amino acids that are found in the human body. The L-Histidine acts as a catalyst to speed of the process of defending the body from any type of antigens. Also, it serves to activate other amino acids such as Threonine, Serine, and Cysteine; these amino acids are all apart of the Alpha Amino Acid group. Other ingredients in Gardasil 9 include Borax and Polysorbate 80. These two ingredients together serve as an emulsifier as an immune system enhancer. One could see why, with so many crucial ingredients, Gardasil 9 is so effective at taking down different types of HPV viruses. HPV vaccines are very important not only for one’s own being, but also for the myriad of generations to come. It is because the fact that we can not determine if one has the virus or not, that everyone has to be vaccinated just to be safe. This way, millions and even billions of lives can be saved.
Now, you may think, why should we stress the topic of receiving vaccinations if everyone will easily take the information in. It is because there are many parents around the world who are afraid of getting their child vaccinated. There is a common rumor that vaccinations cause autism, contain metals like mercury and therefore, they are dangerous to be injected with. Autism has many causes: pregnant mothers taking vitamins that contain folic acids, used to treat anemia, having baby prematurely (26 weeks before expected), pregnancies spread out less than a year, and so on. All of these have been proven by researchers and scientists to cause autism. Vaccinations has not even come close to being apart of a cause of autism according to the American Academy of Pediatrics. Another might say that the Aluminum and Mercury content inside the vaccines can be very detrimental to a growing child’s mental health. It actually turns out, that any high content of anything (even water) can be lethal if taken in huge doses. Also, the Thimerosal (ethyl mercury) is used as a preservative to help prevent fungal contamination. Aluminum, on the other hand, is used merely as an adjuvant, which is anything that prevents tumors from growing. Obviously, the percentage of mercury and aluminum in the entire vaccine composition is the perfect amount to be benign to the human body. Although the fact of just knowing that aluminum and Ethyl mercury are in vaccines might frighten out cautious parents, these vaccines have been given to 97.3% of babies of America in 2013 based on a United States Census Bureau. Clearly, not all the children who has been born in 2013 has autism.
In early August of 2020, Team 8, from the 2020 Annual Youth Leadership Conference at Stanford University, developed an informational comic with the slogan, #TakeTheTest, regarding the prevalence of Hepatitis B Virus around the world as well as the importance of the Hepatitis B Virus vaccination.
Megan Parada, from Team 8, explains, "The #TakeTheTest campaign was developed as a humorous initiative to grasp the attention of the Asian and Pacific Islander (API) community, as well as encourage them to get tested for Hepatitis B (HBV). As members of this demographic are commonly known for a strong academic focus, our team decided to use the idea of high grades being valued on exams appropriately to advocate for Hepatitis B knowledge. Opening with a child stating that he lost 8.3% of points on his recent biology exam connects directly to the fact that 8.3% of APIs are infected with HBV and are unaware of it, ultimately motivating the audience to #TakeTheTest (HBV blood test) and find out if they are infected. As a silent killer and world’s leading cause of liver cancer and Cirrhosis, our #TakeTheTest campaign humorously provides statistics about Hepatitis B, ending with a QR code that links to more information about blood testing and treatment resources, in partnership with Hep B Free - Los Angeles and the Stanford Asian Liver Center."
